Project Summary

Through a competitive bid process, Robinson was chosen to perform as the design-build contractor for a Cotton Seed Storage Facility project in Texas. Robinson’s client, one of the largest agricultural companies in the world, provides a range of products and services to enable sustainable agriculture for farmers worldwide. The need for the additional storage building came from the excess trucking that was required to move cotton seed to the packing facility. The new facility not only reduces the number of trips (per semi-trailer) from multiple local storage facilities to just one facility, but also allows the client to test seed on site for moisture content and evaluate when it’s ready to use.

Robinson’s scope on the project included construction of a 29,000 sq ft pre-engineered metal building. The building has 12 storage bays with concrete and steel walls to separate the stored cotton seed. Because it is important to keep the cotton seed dry and protected, two (2) aeration trenches were installed in each bay. The aeration trenches move air through the floor of the bays to keep the moisture content down on the cotton seed. Additional scope included placement of concrete foundations, installation of 1500 LF of underground pipe, and sitework to include a large amount of grading and paving.

For this project, Robinson proposed multiple layouts, material options, and reviewed constructability through several iterations of the initial design. The client was engaged in the process and open to making changes to maximize value. The approach allowed us to reduce the overall cost of the project by over 10 percent, while still providing our client with the storage capacity originally requested.
